The highest quality of care and attention is given to those nearing the end of life. We are able to offer a unique holistic experience incorporating traditional pain relief techniques combined with physical and psychological care.
Furthermore we are trained to provide emotional support, empathy and compassion to all involved throughout this sensitive period – the individual, their family and also loved ones.
The Home Manager is a Registered General Nurse and is able to offer a truly person centred care plan tailored to meet the individuals’ requirements. Our aim is to fully respect and honour the service users’ needs regardless of any religious, spiritual or agnostic beliefs.
At Portland highly trained and dedicated staff are on hand 24 hours every day of the year to provide nursing support to our residents.
Whether convalescing after a major operation or requiring long term care, our qualified registered nurses and carers will provide professional care to every resident in an attentive and respectful manner; always recognising individual needs and preferences.
Our nursing bedrooms are all designed to combine the practical features required to provide excellent nursing care, but are also designed to be homely and comfortable. We are a care home, and not a hospital or institution. That’s why all our nursing residents have large, individual private bedrooms with their own en suite shower rooms, televisions and many more facilities.
Excellent care isn’t just about professional standards, and beautiful surroundings, it’s also about enjoying living and looking forward to the days ahead.
Our Mission
It is the objective of Portland House to provide nursing care to all of our residents, which exceeds the minimum standards, and embraces the principles of good care practises as outlined in the Nursing and Midwifery Council Codes of Practise and General Social Care Council Codes of Practise.
A sociable, pleasant nursing home in Shrewsbury.
Nursing Care
Care homes providing care for older people may provide personal care or nursing care. Personal care will offer support to ensure basic needs are taken care of, such as washing, eating, going to the toilet and taking medication. Nursing care is the provision of specialist care for those with a disability or mental conditions or for those individuals requiring more than personal care; e.g. those with wounds, colostomy bags, etc. At Portland House we are registered to provide Nursing Care and have friendly, highly qualified nursing staff in attendance 24-hours a day, the people we support are given the very best care and attention, continually tailored to meet their specific needs.
Respite Care
Many families take great joy in providing care and support to their loved ones, so that they can remain at home, whether on a full time, part time or informal basis. However, the physical, emotional and financial consequences can be overwhelming without support for those care givers. Respite care is the provision of short-term accommodation in a facility outside the home in which a loved one may be placed. This provides temporary relief to those who are caring for family members, who might otherwise require permanent placement in a facility outside the home. Respite care has been shown to help sustain family caregiver health, avoid or delay placement in a residential home and reduce the likelihood of abuse and neglect. We offer respite care programmes at all three of our homes, giving individuals a positive experience for a set period in a warm and loving environment.
End of Life Care
In 2006 just over half a million people died in England, with 58% of deaths occurring in an NHS hospital. Studies have shown that less than 5% of people would rather die in a hospital, than at home or in a hospice. In 2008 a national strategy for the provision of end of life care was published; the key aim being to reduce the needs for dying patients to have to go to hospital and/or to have to stay there. This is being achieved through improvements of the provision of support and palliative care in the community. Portland House offers the highest quality of care and attention to those nearing the end of life. This includes pain relief, physical and psychological care, as well as emotional support, empathy and compassion shown to everyone; the individual, their family and loved ones. This specialist care enables individuals suffering from chronic illness to remain out of hospital whilst still receiving the right level of medication and support.
